About Dhiyafa
The International Diplomats Program (Dhiyafa) won the Prime Minister’s Office Government Innovation Competition (Fikra) in 2018. The program is aimed at strengthening Bahrain’s bilateral relationships with participating nations. The Arabic word ‘Dhiyafa’ translates to hospitality and the program encourages participants to explore the Kingdom of Bahrain’s rich history and culture, serving as a dynamic platform for exchanging ideas and building connections with diplomats from diverse backgrounds. The IDP offers a wide range of activities, including lectures, interactive sessions with former Bahraini diplomats, high-ranking government officials, private sector leaders, and civil society representatives. Participants have the opportunity to visit key political and economic institutions, as well as Bahrain’s renowned cultural landmarks. They also experience the nation’s musical traditions, culinary arts, and unique cultural entertainment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to take part in the IDP?
Every year, the Mohamed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa Academy for Diplomatic Studies sends out invitations to countries around the world inviting them to nominate candidates for participation in the International Diplomats Program. If you are nominated and your application is successful, you will be contacted by the Academy with further information.
What are the requirements for candidacy?
- To be a diplomat with at a minimum of 2 years, and a maximum of 5 years of diplomatic experience.
- The age of the candidate should not exceed 35 years.
- Spoken and written proficiency in English.
- As part of their work, candidates must be specialists in Middle Eastern affairs, and particularly in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) affairs.
- Commitment to effective participation in the program.
Candidates must not have taken part in earlier editions of the program.
I was nominated by my government to take part in the IDP, how will I know if my candidacy is successful?
If you are selected as a participant, you will receive a formal letter of acceptance from the Mohamed bin Mubrak Al Khalifa Academy for Diplomatic Studies.
I am a diplomat based in Bahrain. Can I take part in the program?
No. The program targets diplomats who are not currently serving postings in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
When does the IDP take part?
The IDP is held on an annual basis, usually in springtime around the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix season.
What does the program consist of?
A detailed program itinerary is provided to the participants. The program consists of lectures, workshops, roundtables, meetings with officials and dignitaries, site visits, cultural, social, and sports activities, as well as official opening and closing ceremonies.
What is covered?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain bears the expenses of return flight tickets, accommodation, hospitality (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), pick-up from and drop off to Bahrain International Airport, and transportation throughout the program.
Will I need a visa to visit Bahrain as part of the IDP?
If you are accepted as a participant, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain will ensure that you are issued a visa if you require one to enter Bahrain.
Do I need to be able to speak Arabic to take part in the IDP?
No. The formal language of the International Diplomats Program is English.
Will I receive a certificate at the end of the program?
Yes. Participants are awarded with a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the program.
