Fostering Partnerships

(1975 - 1990)

The decade following the inauguration of several Bahraini embassies, notably in the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, marked key developments in diplomatic relations.

The Kingdom of Bahrain’s contribution to the creation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the hosting of one of its first summits in Manama in 1983, reflect the country’s commitment to regional peace and security.

1 January 1975

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

1975

The Kingdom of Bahrain presides over the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level.

June 1975 – January 1977

HE Salman Al Sabagh is appointed as ambassador to the Republic of Iraq. HE Shaikh Ahmed bin Ali Al Khalifa is appointed as ambassador to the Kingdom Saudi Arabia. HE Saif Al Musallam is appointed as ambassador to the State of Kuwait. HE Jassim Bullay is appointed as ambassador to the French Republic. HE Abdulaziz Buali is appointed as ambassador to the United States of America. HE Salim Al Absi is appointed as ambassador in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

27 February 1976

The late Amir of Bahrain, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa receives Egyptian President Anwar Al Sadat.

March 1976

The late Amir of Bahrain, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa receives HM King Khalid of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

10 December 1977

HE Fwasheet Neteyoun presents his credentials as first Thai ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

15 February 1979

The late Amir of Bahrain, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa receives HM Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

13 June 1979

HE Mohammad Hasan Ali presents his credentials as the first Omani ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

21 April 1980

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the World Meteorological Organization.

22 – 23 May 1981

HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak participates in the preparatory ministerial meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

25 – 26 May 1981

The late Amir of Bahrain, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa attends the first GCC summit held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

14 August 1982

HE Kareem Al Shakar is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first permanent representative to the UN in Geneva.

9 – 11 November 1982

The Kingdom of Bahrain hosts the GCC summit for the first time.

1983

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs moves to its new premises.

1 March 1983

HE Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa joins the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a Third Secretary.

1985

The Kingdom of Bahrain presides over the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level.

26 November 1986

The late Amir of Bahrain, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz inaugurate the King Fahd Causeway.

19 – 22 December 1988

The Kingdom of Bahrain hosts the 9th GCC summit.

3 September 1989

HE Hussain Al Sabagh is appointed as the Kingdom’s first ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.

2 November 1989

The Kingdom of Bahrain is elected as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

2 December 1989

HE Khalid Al Musallam is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman.
