Accomplishing Objectives

(1969-1975)

With its flag raised proudly at the United Nations, the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrated its official position as a member of the international community in 1971.

This marked an important milestone in the Kingdom’s contemporary history, one of which was realized approximately two years after the establishment of the Directorate of Foreign Affairs within the Kingdom’s government.

With the Kingdom of Bahrain’s official recognition, the Directorate of Foreign Affairs transformed into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embarked on a journey, cementing old friendships and forging new ones.

12 January 1969

Establishment of the Foreign Affairs Directorate by Decree HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa is appointed as Director.

30 March – 18 April 1970

The United Nations fact-finding mission headed by Vittorio Winspeare-Guicciardi visits the Kingdom of Bahrain.

11 May 1970

The UN Security Council unanimously endorses Winspeare-Guicciardi’s report.

15 August 1971

HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa is declared Amir of the State of Bahrain.

15 August 1971

The Council of Ministers is established by Amiri Decree.

15 August 1971

The Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom sign a “Treaty of Friendship.”

16 August 1971

HE Jawad Al Arayed presents the application of the Kingdom of Bahrain for membership in the United Nations.

21 August 1971

Appointment of the first British ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

30 August 1971

Establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Amiri Decree. HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first Minister of Foreign Affairs.

30 August 1971

Diplomatic and Consular Corps regulated by Amiri Decree.

1 September 1971

HE Dr. Salman Al Saffar is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first permanent representative to the UN.

11 September 1971

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the League of Arab States.

21 September 1971

The Kingdom of Bahrain admitted as the 129th member state of the UN.

21 September 1971

The Embassy of the United States of America opens in Manama.

22 September 1971

The Bahraini flag is raised in a ceremony held at the UN Headquarters.

September 1971

HE Suleiman M. Al Shaheen presents his credentials as first Kuwaiti ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

23 October 1971

Saudi Chargé d’Affaires HE Ali Al Gufaidi presents his credentials as the first Saudi representative to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

8 November 1971

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

29 November 1971

HE Taqi Al Baharna presents his credentials as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

4 December 1971

HE Shaikh Salman bin Duaij Al Khalifa is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first ambassador to the United Kingdom.

18 January 1972

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of UNESCO.

February-June 1972

Representatives of various nations present their credentials as ambassadors to the Kingdom of Bahrain including: The United States of America, The Republic of India, The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, The Arab Republic of Egypt, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, The Republic of Tunisia , The Republic of Iraq, The French Republic.

June 1972

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the Non-Aligned Movement.

17 July 1972

HE Abdulaziz Buali is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first ambassador in Tehran.

29 July 1972

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

7 September 1972

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the International Monetary Fund.

15 September 1972

The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes a member of the World Bank.

22-24 February 1974

Late Amir of Bahrain, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa attends the OIC summit held in Lahore.

20 March 1974

HE Ali Al Mahroos is appointed as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first ambassador to the Lebanese Republic.
